Impact of physicality on network structure
Apstrakt predavanja: Many networks, such as the brain connectome or the hard-wiring of transistors in a computer chip, are spatially embedded networks whose nodes and links have shape and volume and do not intersect, i.e., they are physical. In this talk we will introduce a linear physical network model, whose links are non-intersecting straight cylinders, to study the onset and impact of physicality on the structure of the network. Considering an exact mapping of such a physical network onto the independent sets of a deterministic meta-graph, we will analytically predict the onset of physicality and the emergence of a jamming transition. Moreover, we will show that physicality affects the network structure even when the total volume of the links is negligible. This formalism also allows us to predict functional features of real physical networks, such as synapse formation in the brain, in agreement with empirical data. Overall, our results [1] show that, to understand the evolution and behavior of real complex networks, the role of physicality must be fully quantified.
